Photos of Freiburg (Black Forest)

Freiburg is a small city (200.000 inhabitants) in southwest Germany, near the Swiss and French border. Its mild climate, the beautiful surrounding Black Forest and its comfortable, relaxed and friendly atmosphere make it attractive for many tourists of all nations, as well as students. The University of Freiburg belongs to the best and most popular universities in Germany.

Small water canals ("Baechle") in the streets of the ancient center are a relict of the middle age, when they were used as cattle troughs and provided water in case of fire.
Today they are a potential "danger" for strangers. I have often seen people taking a step backwards for a better photo etc. - resulting in wet feet.

I recommend a "Viertele" (a glass of wine - 0,25 litres) in one of the numerous comfortable wine taverns, for example at "Oberkirch" at the market square, or "Sichelschmiede" near the "Insel". Freiburg is surrounded by wine regions - Kaiserstuhl, Markgräfler Land and Ortenau - which are famous for their good wines.
